Industry Benchmarks

The cost of senior living varies across the country. Getting a clearer picture of your current costs in comparison to those at the senior living communities you're considering can help guide your decision. Assisted Living and Independent Living communities typically range from $1,500 to $6,000 per month. A Continuing Care Retirement Community, or CCRC, typically has an entrance fee starting at $100,000, depending on the community. In addition, many require additional fees such as a move-in fee or monthly service fees. To know your exact costs, you'll need to speak with a community leader.

Commonwealth's cost calculator above can help you begin the homework required for comparing expenses and ultimately determining the right choice for you and your family.

The price quoted above includes the base rent plus 1st level of care for assisted living and memory care. However, the only way to assess an individual's needs with true accuracy is to schedule an in-person assessment. Please reach out to our team with a personalized discussion about care.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pricing

Pricing FAQs
  • So how much does senior living cost?

Senior living costs vary greatly by region and level of care. Generally speaking, assisted living costs somewhere between $3,000 and $6,000 per month. Comparatively, home care costs between $3,600 and $6,600 per month. An in depth discussion of these costs can be found on Where You Live Matters. Keep in mind that while the vast majority of costs of daily life: rent, utilities, housekeeping, maintenance, and care are included in the standard fees, some additional services may be charged separately. An example of this is laundry. Some residents do their own laundry while others prefer the community manage this service.

  • Then why is Commonwealth sharing this information?
In early 2021, our team engaged a third-party firm to research what families needed most in their online search for senior living. This firm asked, what is the single most important piece of information individuals need when doing their research? The answer was price. Interestingly, when asked what was the most frustrating part of researching senior living, the answer again was lack of transparent pricing. The solution was straightforward. While Commonwealth Senior Living has committed to openness around pricing for many years, this research prompted us to also provide an explanation of what it meant with a helpful tool to compare costs. The starting rates and fees we show in our cost comparison tool include the base rent for a companion suite as well as the first level of care.
  • Is Commonwealth expensive?

When comparing rates between our community and like providers, Commonwealth Senior Living falls somewhere in between. We are not the most expensive or the least expensive in any market. We pride ourselves on a deep knowledge and experience of caring for seniors, and encourage families to reach out to us even if our rates are beyond their means. Our teams are focused on improving the lives of seniors and their families and are honored to provide recommendations of communities and resources in the area who can meet their needs even if we cannot. • Why is it so hard to find out what senior living costs?
Unlike homes for sale, cars, and other large ticket purchases, the cost of senior living is unique to each individual because it includes not only the cost of the suite itself, but also includes the care each individual needs. Many senior living providers choose to have the conversations with each individual family rather than posting them online. In most cases, the level of care needed cannot be determined without an in-person-assessment. While it may feel like providers are “hiding” their costs, it is more likely that they would not be able to provide a true financial picture without all the information about the future resident’s needs.
