International Arts, Dining, and Culture Program Creates Lifelong Memories

Our signature Travel the World program returns in 2017 with even more opportunities for residents across our communities to explore the literature, art, cuisine, and cultures of different countries. Each month-long immersion program promotes socialization, creates new experiences, and offers amazing learning opportunities.

We kicked things off in January with a visit to Italy! At Commonwealth Senior Living at Front Royal, residents and associates learned about Mount Vesuvius and even made a model of the famous Volcano that erupted in 79 AD that led to the burying and destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Dining Services Director-extraordinaire Chevonda at Commonwealth Senior Living at the West End treated our residents to a make-your-own pizza party where residents learned about the history of the famous Italian meal.

Travel the World was developed by Bernie Cavis and has quickly become a favorite with residents, family members, and associates. Studies by Dr. Gene Cohen, director of the Center on Aging, Health & Humanities at George Washington University, indicate that the quality of life in seniors can improve through exposure to the arts and humanities. Embracing the fine arts, food, language, literature, and art of other cultures is proven to impact individuals in positive ways by inducing both psychological and physiological healing.

The 2017 tour schedule for Travel the World includes China in February, Ireland in March, France in April, Mexico in May, Greece in June, the United States in July, England in August, Egypt in September, Switzerland in October, Native Cultures in November, and a World Celebration in December.
