Each year during Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month in June, we celebrate the Longest Day. This day always occurs on the summer solstice, or the longest day of sunshine during the calendar year. We are excited that there is so much passionate research around Alzheimer's disease and other dementias being done as well as the personalized care we are able to provide as we continue to learn more about the disease. But first, what is dementia?
Dementia is an overall term covering a wide range of medical conditions including Alzheimer's disease which accounts for almost 80% of diagnoses. These conditions are caused by abnormal brain changes which lead to a decline in cognitive abilities and affect behaviors and feelings. Here are a few important things to know.
- The Alzheimer's Association says there are three stages of progression: Early-stage, middle-stage, and late-stage. In the first stage, individuals have difficulties coming up with the right word or name, performing tasks in social settings, or with planning and organizing. In the second stage, individuals may become forgetful of events, feel moody or withdrawn, or experience large changes in sleeping patterns. During late-stage, individuals may lose awareness of recent experience or their surroundings, have difficulty communicating, and become vulnerable to infections like pneumonia.
- There are over 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer's and other dementias and 55 million people worldwide.
- In 2020, COVID-19 contributed to a 17% increase in deaths related to Alzheimer's disease and other dementias.
- Over 11 million Americans provide unpaid care for people with Alzheimer's or other dementias.
At Commonwealth Senior Living, we understand memory care is a journey for the entire family and are committed to providing expert training for not only our own team, but also comprehensive support to the families who entrust us with the care of their loved one. Our Sweet Memories program is specifically designed to deliver the highest quality of care, support, and engagement to our residents living with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. Part of that support is through ongoing education on what your loved one is experiencing daily.
On the Longest Day, we strive to show those battling Alzheimer's or other dementias and their loved ones that they are not alone. We are grateful to be a part of a team that supports each of these individuals in any way possible. On this day, the Alzheimer's Association encourages individuals to choose an activity they are passionate about to create a fundraiser for the cause we are all mutually passionate about. One of the ways we have shown our passion on the Longest Day is through the Walk to End Alzheimer's. Here are a few highlights:
