Tips for Becoming Top Talent in Senior Living

A career in senior living is a rewarding choice that offers the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. To us, the Commonwealth Difference means that improving the lives of seniors, their families, and our associates is central to everything we do, and we are excited you are interested in learning more about a passion-driven career in senior living.

Below, we've outlined a few best practices that may increase the likelihood of moving you to the next step in working at a senior living community.

Understand the Senior Living Industry

According to Tommy Comer, Commonwealth Senior Living's Chief Human Resource Officer, "Compassion, empathy, and patience are among the most important attributes individuals considering a role in a senior living community should have." He adds, "Being a caregiver, or pursuing any role in senior living, requires the ability to anticipate the needs of others, often with major stresses thrust upon them. Those who can adapt with grace and compassion tend to be wildly successful in virtually all areas of the community. Those individuals are the ones family members want supporting their loved one."

Highlight Relevant Skills

Be sure to include relevant skills, experience, or areas of expertise on your resume and application. If you have previously worked in healthcare or have experience with seniors, be sure to mention that. Experience in customer service and effective communication skills are also excellent transferrable skills for senior living, as you will likely interact with residents and their families frequently.

Apply for an Apprenticeship

Gaining on-the-job experience through an apprenticeship provides invaluable experience and networking opportunities. Our apprenticeship program allows associates to earn while they learn and aligns with our goal of growing a strong healthcare workforce.

Add a Personal Touch

Tommy says, "Senior living is a personal industry, so career seekers should visit the communities they'd like to work at. Ask for the Executive Director, bring your resume, and make an impression with a personal touch. Those behaviors resonate in senior living, compared to other industries." The best way to stand out and make a connection is to show why a career in senior living is meaningful for you, or why it is your calling.

We wholeheartedly embrace the four pillars of the Commonwealth Difference: We Listen. We Love. We Care. We Serve. and are always happy to welcome individuals interested in furthering that mission.
